PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) aims for improved production efficiency and reduced drilling costs through a digital transformation initiative that the company started back in 2023.

The program, called G-Bionic, is a series of long-term digital transformation project designed to create a data-driven work culture and provide the foundation for data-driven decision-making across all PGEO operations. As Ahmad Yani, PGE’s Director of Operations, explains, the company aims to implement 52 digital initiative that cover the entire value chain of geothermal, including the subsurface, drilling, surface, and enterprise.

He further emphasized that utilizing technology is not merely a tool but a key factor in strengthening competitiveness and ensuring PGE’s business sustainability amidst the dynamics of the global energy industry. “Through digital transformation, PGE strives to accelerate data-driven decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the development of precise and sustainable clean energy,” Yani said in an official statement.

To date, G-Bionic has reduced drilling costs by up to 6% and optimized working time by up to 100,000 productive working hours. The technology is described as being able to increase production by up to 6% through well optimization and improved power plant efficiency. It can also reduce lost production opportunities through the use of machine learning and digital twins. Overall, the initiative has an estimated value creation equivalent to a 5% to 7% increase in net income.

PT Pertamina (Persero) Independent Commissioner Raden Adjeng Sondaryani expressed her appreciation for the initiative, stating that it is a concrete demonstration of building  a data-drive work culture that is safe, sustainable, adaptive, and a step towards PGEO being a world-class clean energy company. PGEO President Director supported this sentiment, describing the effort as integral in achieving the company’s goal of 1.8 GW of installed capacity by 2033 and a long-term development goal of up to 3 GW.
